San Antonio, TX, December 8, 2011 – Education Service Center, Region 20 (ESC-20) has been awarded $318,000 from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) grant program. Through the award of this grant, nine (9) of our most rural schools will reap extensive benefits in education through the use of advanced telecommunications technologies. The purpose of the ESC-20 DLT program is to provide high-definition distance learning equipment to support Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), as well as upgrade the ESC-20 bridge equipment and scheduling software. The "Visions Your Future" program will include an interactive lecture series for elementary, middle and high school students focused on the career clusters that are most in demand in the San Antonio area (Manufacturing and biosciences).

Texas Education Agency Update
Texas Education Agency (TEA) is undergoing changes to programs they administer. Programs affrected include Title II, Part D, STaR Chart, ePlan and E-Rate.
Title II, Part D
Technology Application Teacher Network (TATN) website will be maintained by the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) Division of Instructional Materials and Educational Technology (IMET).
STaR Chart
STaR Chart system is moving into Project Share with a new URL – www.starchart.epsilen.com
ePlan
Districts will complete their ePlan the same way as in the past, and ePlan information will be available on the TEA website.
E-Rate
Support and oversight of the e-rate program will be handled by TEA – including the function of Texas E-Rate Coordinator; interactions with the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) and the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC), which administers the program for the FCC, including serving as intermediary between USAC and Texas public schools; maintaining an E-Rate listserv; providing National School Lunch Program (NSLP) data for applicants and USAC; statewide training; communications with the FCC and USAC Program Integrity Assurance (PIA) and school districts; and other questions that may arise concerning the program.

The H-E-B Excellence in Education Early Childhood Award is designed to support public or private schools or not-for-profit learning agencies that focus on the care and education of children of under the age of five. The purpose of the award is to offer support to help create or enhance Kinder Readiness programs that prepare children to enter Kindergarten socially and academically ready to learn.

The Michael Davis Music Is Revolution Mini-Grant
The Michael Davis Music Is Revolution Foundation’s mini-grant programs was created for teachers to implement, support, and/or improve their ability to provide quality music education for their students. Mini-grants are awarded for up to $500. The foundation is primarily seeking projects that clearly contain a music education focus. Funds may be used for supplies, materials, equipment, transportation for a field trip, and/or to bring a performer or musical group to school. Applications for the mini-grants are reviewed three times a year.
Due: January 15, April 14, and October 15
ING Unsung Heroes
Every year grants are given to K-12 educators utilizing new teaching methods and techniques that improve learning. Each year, educators submit applications for an ING Unsung Heroes grant by describing projects they have initiated or would like to pursue. Each project is judged on its:
· Innovative method
· Creativity
· Ability to positive influence the students
Each year, 100 finalists are selected to receive a $2,000 grant, payable to both the winning teacher and his or her school. At least one grant is awarded in each of the 50 states, provided at least one qualified application was received from each state. Winners are selected by Scholarship America, a national non-profit educational support and student aid service organization.
Of the 100 finalists, three are selected for additional financial awards: $25,000 for first place; $10,000 for second place; and $5,000 for third place. The top winners are selected by ING’s Educators Advisory Board, consisting of six distinguished educators from across the United States.
